Description

The painting depicts the retired emperor Trần Nhân Tông who has now become a monk and returned to Hanoi from his hermitage in Vũ Lâm.

The painting showed a total of 82 characters, including people who accompanied the Mahasattva of Truc Lam from his hermitage and the people, including the new emperor Trần Anh Tông, who welcomed him on his way back to Thăng Long (modern day Hanoi).

Behind the Mahasattva were two disciples - one holding a bamboo stick, one holding a waving ceiling -, a Taoist monk named Lâm Thời Vũ riding a buffalo and Indian buddhist monks holding canes, alms bowls, and scriptures. In front of them is a crane that shows the way, and behind them a white elephant carrying Buddhist sutras, which in some way resemble the traditional Champa art.
